Working and Performance dog trainers and competitors. how do you choose a prospect?

What disipline are you choosing, what age do you prefer? How do you choose breeder and individual dog/puppy?

Update:

Greek. I find this fasinating. Some day I would love to have a discussion about the differences between a real life working dog and a sport dog. I promise not to ask for free training advice.

Update 2:

I was going to ask "which breed is best for me a chiwawa or sr bernard. I would have gotten more answers but when the Get a lab and get a pit answers came up I would have to shoot myself. I don't feel like cleaning up the mess.

I know breeders that I have been dealing with for 25 years in Europe who breed the type of dogs I am looking for, both for work or sport.

The breed I always want and look for is, of course, the Malinois since there is not another breed like it anywhere.

If it is real world work I am looking to train the dog in, I look for young adults, 12-18 months, dogs that can be X-rayed so I can see the results of those X rays before I invest any time or money in that dog.

They can also show me what they can do RIGHT NOW, in terms of drives and ability.

I look for prey as well as some defense drives. I want a dog to have excellent, over the top hunt drive and I want that dog to have a serious side, meaning that it can become civil. I like a dog with social aggression and I spend a lot of time either testing that dog/s myself or having them tested by people I trust back home.

If I am looking for a sport dog, I have to go with a puppy, no older then 6 weeks, that I can mold and start training immediately as with anything that requires a lot of technique, you need to start young.

I wont go into particular tests in here, those days of giving away that kind of free advice are long gone.

ADD: And while you are it, you may want to ask something easier in here...like, "what to name my doggie" or "how much do you love and kiss your doggie"?

Questions like yours, even though they are HUGE breath of fresh air, are NOT for the cerebral deficient that lurk in here...Now watch my TD...
