Do Psychiatrists in India really cure or just do some medical experimentation.?

They start with the usual line" A complete cure is not possible, but we can at some time at least get the patient to near normal. They start with prescribing expensive drugs and change the prescription after a month. My observation is that there is no change in most of the patients behavior, despite several sessions and the patients are left to their fate and the Psychiatrist continues charging high fees stating that the treatment is on an ongoing basis and there will be a change to normalcy at some time. This continues for years. Are they capable of diagnosing or just experimenting with the usage of drugs, hoping that one of them might bring a change. The parents or wards of the patient are helpless in the matter as they have no other option than to place their entire reliance at the mercy of these Doctors. Advice and guidance from the experienced few will very much be appreciated.

Update:

Mr. Karl Eric, that is excellent advice, but that is possible in your country. I am referring to India, where even the Government has not given Mental Health even the least recognition. You have committed Psychiatrists who place the interests of the patient above everything else. I know it is not curable but at least your Doctors in that field take personal interest and try to make the patient live a normal life.I have consulted more than 25 psychiatrists in my country and not one of them interviewed the patient or the parents. They are just indifferent and any questions posed to them is always replied in the"Your are wasting my time" manner. Not even one psychiatrist has called for the reports of the other psychiatrists. They specialize in Psychiatry to earn and add to their riches only. Only one psychiatrist s had done all the things you have stated, but he was a visiting faculty from UK, and he was on a short visit to India. Your answer has given me a lot of hope and God wi

like in other fields of medicine, there are good and poor psychiatrists. a good psychiatrist who has more emotional and intelligence quotient does not depend on the drug therapy.

He first rules out any physical disorder like thyroid ism, diabetes, hyper tension or brain related diseases which to some extent cause psychological problems.

Then he thoroughly interviews the patient and his family to find out the root cause .

He uses both drug and behavioural modification therapy and in some cases psycho therapy depending upon the condition of the disorder.

He advises the family members to cope up with the stress caused by the psychological disorder of the patient.

Like in other metabolic disorders like diabetes, hypertension, in some mental disorders, life long usage of certain drugs is compulsory. They also have their side effects.

So choose a good therapist or neuro psychiatrist and if necessary do not hesitate to take second opinion.

Some psychiatric disorders are curable (example A depressive episode), some are controllable like OCD, some require lifelong medications with only partial improvement, like chronic schizophrenia, due to variety of reasons. Psychiatric drugs unlike other drugs act on neurotransmitters in the neurons (brains cells). Hence they are difficult to select and use and show results. The practice of psychiatry is an art which requires lots of medical and social intelligence, encompassing the ability to pick symptoms and chose medications. If you are not satisfied with your psychiatrist, better get 2nd or 3rd opinion rather than criticizing them all. If even then u don't improve it is your disorder to be blamed rather than the doctor. its like having a faulty car (in u r case mind) and blaming all the mechanics that they are useless in getting it fixed - All the best

There is no cure for psychiatric illness. There is medication to help with the symptoms and causes for the illness.

Depression, Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are all caused by chemicals in the brain being 'off'.

There is no 'cut and dry' answer, and many times, Patients often respond to medications--but oftentimes the first trial (or two) don't seem to work. It takes 6 weeks for medications to be given a decent try--so this all takes time.

Some people 'feel depressed' and actually do not have the mental disorder of 'depression'. often they benefit from being able to talk out their problems with a supportive listener.

But there are others who actually have inherited the disorder of depression through genetics--and this depression requires medication to balance the brain chemistry
