chrysler sebring 2004 starter fuse #8 keeps blowing?

I have a chrysler sebring 2004 convertible that keeps blowing the starter fuse(fuse #8). What could be the cause of this? do I need to replace the starter, alternator and starter solenoid? or is it a cable that isn't grounded properly?

    You have a high resistance in your starting circuit.

    This could be anything from a bad starter, to a loose, corroded or damaged connection, bad relay or ignition switch.

    Have your starter bench tested and proceed from there.

    This is a VERY common issue with this vehicle!

    You need to replace the starter.

    To Test:

    1. Replace fuse #8. Remove the starter relay. Use an ammeter to check current draw of the starter solenoid. With the key off, connect the ammeter to terminals 30 and 87 of the starter relay with the key off. It should be less than 15 amps. The engine should crank but will not start.

    2. Replace the starter if starter solenoid current draw is more than 15 amps.

    NOTE: Fuse #8 supplies power to the ignition switch, the starter relay and the fuel pump relay.

    ADDED: The TCM is powered by Fuse# 9 in the PDC (power distribution center) TCM load (solenoid drivers) is applied to Fuse # 9 is shown by the TCM relay in this circuit.

    NOTE: Chrysler starters solenoids of this vintage are known for increasing current draw as the winding insulation degrades. (been here before)

    Does it only blow when trying to start it or right away without the key on? If it only blows when you try and start it, then you've tracked down most of the problem. You know its not your battery cables if everything else works. If it does blow with the key on only, then it could be the relay stuck.

    But its definitely not a ground problem. Without ground, the circuit can't complete and blow the fuse. Try and pull the starter relay and replace the starter fuse and see if it blows. If it doesn't, you know the issue is somewhere after the relay. If it does blow, its in between the ignition switch and the fuse.

    I have the same problem with my 2004 sebring but started blowing the fuse after remote start was installed. what could be the issue.

    Replace fuse #8 and see if it blows with the key turned on or when cranking only.

    If the fuse blows only when cranking, remove starter relay and see if it still blows. If it does, unplug the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and see if it blows in the crank position. If it does, check the wiring to the relay and TCM from the ignition switch.

    If it blows just when the key is turned on, remove the fuel pump relay and see if it blows. If it doesn’t, check the wiring back to the fuel pump for a short to ground.

    Fuse 8 supplies power to the ignition switch, the starter relay and the fuel pump relay.

    At least a couple of people have done some research and have cut and pasted an identifix post. Which means they at least work in a shop. Mastertech and Dennis have posted the right procedure the rest of the answers are guesswork.

    This is a 20 amp fuse. Long story short, use a 30 amp fuse. Enjoy.
