What's with the name of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim?
I don't understand why they have two city names. I know they used to be the Los Angeles Angels, then the California Angels, and just the Anaheim Angels. Why Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim? It just sounds weird. And do they play out of LA or Anaheim, or is it a split city thing? I remember the Ducks used to be called the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Is is just an Anaheim thing to have everything be the (blank) of Anaheim?

I'm a big Angels fan and am very familiar to Anaheim, the city, the people of Orange County, and the great history and layout of the community at large. Unlike there neighbor to the north in Los Angeles County, Orange County was an effectively planned layout throughout the many cities within. The planners took a page from the urban sprawl in L.A. and decided that this "would not happen here".
As others have already mentioned it was and is the brain child of Art Moreno; he is a good marketer and knows how to turn a buck. He also knows how to attempt to strike a balance. The many good residents of Anaheim and the larger Orange County residents really, truly do not like nor care for the inclusion of "Los Angeles" in the name. To the real Anaheim Angel/California Angels fan the "Cowboy" is still considered the quintessential owner of the team. Gene Autry knew how to keep ticket prices down and knew how to price hot dogs and soda so that kids could still come to the park and enjoy a game based on nothing more than maybe cutting grass in the neighborhoods or delivering newspapers. This of course is all but a bygone era currently as we all know.
Marketing and city association by name is for everyone outside of Anaheim; this name does nothing to make locals happy. The Los Angeles Rams used to play in this same stadium back in the pre St. Louis days (maybe you are aware of this) for the NFL. The dollars earned by Art Moreno in this change can't be ignored. He did what he set out to do and with an AL Rookie of the year in Trout the team is on a good path for 2013 - we just wish Pujols would become more consistent as he was in St. Louis with the Cardinals.
The ice rink for the Anaheim Ducks, the "Big A" for the Angels, and Disneyland are sort of triangulated in a terrific pattern where a healthy person could wallk to all three locations after parking. Anaheim is not a part of Los Angeles and the Orange County true resident wants no association with L.A. Residents of L.A. could care less about Orange County and Anaheim.

The team name was changed to include "Los Angeles" to market to the larger Los Angeles area.
The team plays in Anaheim, and "Anaheim" is required to be part of the team name because of terms in the team's lease at Anaheim Stadium.

The reason, quite simply, is MONEY.
Prior to buying the Angels, Arte Moreno was a master marketer who made his fortunes through billboard advertising. With billboards, it's all about placement. The higher the visibility, the more a billboard company can charge for the space.
By adding "Los Angeles" to the name, he basically was trying to charge LA market rates for advertising. He coupled this with a massive billboard campaign within Los Angeles County to prove to TV and Radio advertisers that the Angels could "sell" in LA. Once he created "visibility" for the team in the LA market he was able to charge higher advertising rates.
Locals may notice that ads for local "mom & pop" businesses during Angel games have pretty much dropped off the air since Moreno's renaming...proof that he is, in fact, getting the higher rates paid to him by "big brand" advertisers.
Keeping "Anaheim" in the name was, in my opinion, a pretty weak attempt to maintain some local identity...but it seems to have worked because while some fans expressed displeasure, attendance figures of local residents did not drop.

The team plays in Anaheim, but the owner included "Los Angeles" in the name to gain a bigger fanbase. It's the same reason the Giants are the New York Giants, not the East Rutherford Giants.

It's 100% because the Angles are legally obligated to keep "Anaheim" in their team name; it was included by the city of Anaheim when they built the Angels a new stadium.
I believe Moreno has expressed a desire to build a stadium 'in' LA eventually, and they'd drop "of Anaheim," of course.

After Arturo Moreno bought the team in 2005, he changed the name, claiming that it would appeal to more fans than just calling the team "Anaheim". But it doesn't seem to have either helped or hurt the team's attendance. None of the media in the LA area uses that name. And everyone I know thinks it is the stupidest team name in sports.
