That has never worked right. Most users ignore it.

The Y!A spell-checker is one of the biggest jokes on the site. It always seems to be checking the spelling in a language other than the one I am using. Ignore it.
Myself, I use the spell-checker in my browser and ignore the Y!A one. I'm on Firefox and found it under Tools > Options > General. I checked the box that says "check my spelling as I type."
That spell-checker is trustworthy and customizable. To add words to that list, right click on the word it flags. You'll get choices of other correctly-spelled words to use and a choice to add the word to the spell-checker's dictionary.

Anything I type is completely misspelled on that thing. Get Firefox and Element Hiding Helper for Adblock Plus and take the thing off. Then you'll just have Firefox's spellchecker, which works.

The Spell Checker has been malfunctioning for months, just lately it seems to not be working for anybody. Apparently, fixing it is not a high priority for Yahoo!.
