Folders look empty in external hard drive?

External hard drives are a place to store large amounts of music and video, but on my 2TB hard drive after a while, something went wrong with it. The top level folders now looked empty, even though the data has been originally stored and I have 1.5TB of files. When I opened the external hard drive from My Computer, a list of folders in Windows Explorer appeared, but when I opened one of them, it looked empty as if I hadn't stored anything in it. But when I restarted my computer, my external hard drive worked fine. Can you explain what is the problem?

Update:

I am using Windows Vista. Before rebooting the computer, every time I opened any folder in the top level on the external hard drive, it looked empty. I opened one and it looked empty. I opened another and same result.

i guess you are using Win7. When the files too many, win7 seems to take more long time to load the files to be viewed. I mean the green bar in address bar.

If the files all starts from one parent folder, then break it, dont put too many files in a folder.
