Fanfiction is when someone takes either the story or characters (or both) of a certain piece of work, whether it be a novel, TV show, movie, etc, and create their own story based on it. Sometimes people will take characters from one movie and put them in another, which is called a cross-over.

Most people who bash fanfiction are not willing to look past the fact that it's based on something else to see that it could be worth reading IF you like the subject. If they don't like the subject, then obviously they are going to automatically dismiss the fanfiction.

It is true, however, that some fanfictions are rather poorly written and only a few hundred words, and it is also true that some people just write them so they can have their favorite characters have sex. But, if you take the time to find something decent, you can end up with a fanfiction story that is so close to the original piece of art, that you'd barely notice the difference.

It's when fans take a story that has already been published (Book, Movie, TV show, Anime, video game, whatever.) and write another story using the same characters, world, species (such as a wizard exactly like one in Harry Potter) or another element that is in the series. They are not allowed to be sold for profit, but if you change the names and do not copy it exactly, it is publishable. (Take 50 Shades of Gray. Used to be a Twilight fanfiction before a novel) Parodies are kind of like fan-fiction, except they are allowed to be sold, I believe.

Sometimes, fanfictions will not use the exact personalities, and may change some things around. And normally, there will be at least a few original characters. (OC)

Some fanfictions are used to choose whom they think should be together. (Like Draco/Hermione from the Harry Potter series, or Max/Dylan from the Maximum Ride series, or Bella/Jacob from the Twilight series.)

There are also crossover fanfictions, where two series's worlds will be put together. Such as, what if Percy Jackson came to Hogwarts? Or what if the Harry Potter wizards were sparkling vampires?

Some fanfictions have become so horrendously horrible that there are fanfictions written about it. If you're looking for a place to write or read fanfiction, use fanfiction.net. There are actually decent ones out there, if you can find them.

Just as it sounds. The fans of TV shows, movies, books, video games and so on write their own fictional stories based on them.

For example a Harry Potter fan fiction might feature all of J.K Rowling's characters, but the storyline will be something that the fan has come up with themselves.

Fiction made by fans of a series.

Most of it sucks, but some of it can actually be downright amazing.

Lets say there's a series you like that abruptly gets cancelled and you don't know what happens next. Writers will make up their own stories and some of it is actually well written enough to appease even the most diehard fans.

Or sometimes people don't like it when their favorite character gets killed off or isn't put in the spotlight much, so they'll expand upon that character's storyline.

When it comes to romances, sometimes fans don't like who the character chooses from their love triangle and will rewrite it so that they end up with who they wanted.

It's when unicorns poop rainbows and all the little fairies come out to play in the mildew.

No. It's fiction, written by fans based on a book/movie/tv show. No joke
