Upgrading Windows XP to Windows 7 problem?
I have a hard drive with a genuine windows XP installed. However, it is unable to boot because of the "windows/system32/config/system" file is corrupt. I do have a copy of "Windows 7 Ultimate UPGRADE" (genuine as well) burnt to a disc. My question is, am I able to load up this CD with windows 7 upgrade on it and install windows 7 as normal or will it not work because that "windows/system32/config/system" file is corrupt?
@Darryl (Sorry, new to this thing :/)
So it will boot into the install process as per normal and whether that file is corrupt/missing or not shouldn't matter?

It depends if you have the full Windows 7 OS on a disk, or just the upgrade installer. If you only have the upgrade installer, then you must get your Windows XP to work again. If you have the full disk with Windows 7, I suggest a clean installation of the new Operating System.
However... If you do have a Windows XP boot disk, you can get to the recovery console there, type in sfc /scannow and it should scan and repair all system files. Then, your Windows XP will work again. That is the only way if, you only have a Windows 7 upgrade disk.

You can NOT upgrade XP to Windows 7
it has to be a clean install.
an upgrade disc is completely the wrong disc to use.
