Upgrading Winodws XP to Windows 7 problem?
I have a hard drive with a genuine windows XP installed. However, it is unable to boot because of the "windows/system32/config/system" file is corrupt. I do have a copy of "Windows 7 Ultimate UPGRADE" (genuine as well) burnt to a disc. My question is, am I able to load up this CD with windows 7 upgrade on it and install windows 7 as normal or will it not work because that "windows/system32/config/system" file is corrupt?

In theory the procedure would work but the real question is why the error message was coming up? A random file corruption? Unlikely, quite possibly a sign of failing hard disk (bad sectors forming) or a malicious software infection.
You can continue with the procedure but don't be surprise if the Windows 7 installation ends up with a failure or post installation the system starts acting up. Ideally you never want to upgrade the operating system when the existing installation has serious problems. A re-install (without formatting) is a safer option.
If I were you, I would back up the critical data by slaving this drive to another working system (if possible), then do a fresh install of Windows XP or 7 using the applicable media.
Yes, you can still do a fresh install of Windows 7 using the upgrade CD!
