Can a sole proprietor refer to themselves as a company? i.e. DBA name + co.?

I plan on setting up a sole proprietorship (in Los Angeles it requires some paperwork). But, I would like to, if lawful, refer to this business as noted within the DBA and with a co. or company notation after the DBA name. Or would I just note my DBA as businessname co.? Any help much appreciated.
