The Mayan "race" is alive and well. (sigh)
"The present-day Maya, as a whole, do not attach much significance to 2012. Although the calendar round is still used by some Maya tribes in the Guatemalan highlands, the Long Count was strictly employed by the classic Maya, and was only recently rediscovered by archaeologists. Mayan elder Apolinario Chile Pixtun and Mexican archaeologist Guillermo Bernal both note that "apocalypse" is a Western concept that has little or nothing to do with Mayan beliefs. Bernal believes that such ideas have been foisted on the Maya by Westerners because their own myths are "exhausted"

What about the Maya?
"Nothing is going to happen in 2012. There is no Mayan prophecy about 2012. In addition to the Chol Qij the Mayans have various other calendar counts of lesser mantic importance. One of these is the Long Count, which is a continuous count in days since August 9th, 3114 BCE. The Long Count will reset to zero-zero-zero-zero-zero on December 21, 2012. But this is just a major calendar change – their equivalent of Y2K – with no more spiritual significance than the change of millenium had for us. This 2012 thing is being touted by some non-Mayans as a kind of New Age version of the Rapture: a miraculous transformation of human consciousness which sweeps humanity up into the clouds to escape the coming tribulation. But things don’t happen that way in real life. If there is a fundamental transformation in human consciousness, the way it will probably occur is that the environment and civilization will deteriorate over the next few decades. And then people will draw together and open their hearts to one another, as they do in the face of any natural catastrophe such as an earthquake or flood. When people lose their faith in the system and start listening to their own hearts is when the system will change. "

Finally, "For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

"Maya inscriptions...reference future predicted events or commemorations that would occur on dates that lie beyond 2012 ... Most of these are in the form of "distance dates" where some Long Count date is given.
For example, on the west panel at the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, a section of the text projects into the future to the 80th Calendar Round (CR) 'anniversary' of the famous Palenque ruler ...which lies over 4,000 years in the future from Pakal's time—13 October 4772"

While many clam the calendar "ends." the date isn't 2012.
"this date lies some 41,341,049,999,999,999,999,999,994,879 years in the future, or 3 quintillion times the scientifically accepted age of the universe."

The Mayan race disappeared? Seriously?
Well, that's news to the 6 million Mayans currently living in Mexico, Honduras and Guatamala, then.
btw.....ONE mayan calender ended in 2012, because that was how big it was. You don't think the world ends every december, do you, just because that's the last page on your calender?
oh, and there are 3 other mayan calenders, one of which goes on for another 400 years.
Feel better, now?

I know plenty of Modern Mayans. If the Mayan race disappeared long ago, I am a ghost then.

I'm going to an end of the world party in Atlanta, there is no sense in debating this. If the World ends you can't stop it if it doesn't then you just go to work like you did the previous day.
See you at the party. I'm not sure if there is an after party scheduled though. =)

Yeah all that superstition crap is just that. Probably another Gore scare to commercialize something that for all we know could be transposed or just WRONG. I'm not holding my breath. I'm living each day like the last until then. If I die, I die. At least I had FUN lol!

They didn't count leap years either so maybe its all just a big joke that has just taken this long for the world to catch on to.

They were wise beyond their years, that's why they disappeared. Why hang about for impending doom and destruction when you can just pop-off the planet on your spaceship??
......or something......
