Binomial expansion question?

When solving a binomial expansion question, is x on its own always equal to 1?

    I'm not sure what you're asking so here goes my best guess.

    Written out in full,

    x = 1x¹

    (x + 1)ⁿ = 1 + nx + [n(n - 1)x²]/2! + [n(n - 1)x³]/3! + ..

    The coefficient of 'x' = 1 but you can not know what x is equal to unless it's given.

    (a*x)^n

    x is not = to1
