Whatever happened to freedom of religion?

Whatever happened to freedom of religion?

So yesterday we had our annual Christmas card exchange and work, and as usual I took special care to write a Bible verse personally chosen for each co-worker. We have one of those Satanic "Wiccan" people in our office (I know this because she wears big dangly earrings and wears black a lot). So obviously I used Exodus 22:18 and even added an extra note telling her I would pray for her to give up her evil lifestyle.

So the Satanist gives out cards with a cartoon reindeer and "Happy Holidays" on it, so of course I immediately threw it in the trash. Later I took a marker, crossed out the "Happy Holidays" and wrote the correct "Merry Christmas" on her card and put it back on my desk, just to show how tolerant and forgiving I am.

And then yesterday, my manager calls me into the office and spends half an hour insulting my religious beliefs and making vile accusations against me. I never realized my manager was an atheist who just ignores the Constitution because they hate Jesus. The end result is that I have until the close of business on Friday to write the Satanist a formal letter of apology and I have until the end of December to present proof that I have attended and completed the company's "voluntary" Diversity Training sessions.

Whatever happened to Freedom of Religion? Why am I being persecuted for my beliefs? Why doesn't the ACLU stand up for decent people like me instead of atheists and muslims?

Bonus Question: What Bible verses should I include in my letter to let the Wiccan know that even though she is evil and destined for Hell, I still pray for her and that I understand that she couldn't help persecuting me because she is enthralled by Satan?

Freedom of religion is alive and well. That's why there is legislation to prevent people from abusing people of different faiths or of no faith at all. We are all entitled to our own beliefs. What we are not entitled to is to judge other people and insult them because they are different to us.

You say this co-worker is a "Satanic Wiccan" on the basis "she wears big dangly earrings and wears black a lot"? You cannot be serious! And you brand her as "Satanic" because she is a Wiccan? Then you wonder why your manager gave you a verbal dressing down? Madam, you need to attend that Diversity Training course like you need oxygen.

You also say you are being persecuted for your beliefs. What about your treatment of your co-worker? What you have said about her isn't persecution? If you are a Christian, then all I can say is you are not acting in a very Christ-like manner.

Bonus Question - the scriptures I recommend you use are these:

"God does not judge by external appearance" (Galatians 2:6).

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way as you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you" (Matthew 7:1-2).

I don't believe this story is true. If your boss insulted your religion, you have the right to file a complaint.

My work place has several Christians, at least one who is very religious and always has a Bible at her desk. We have at least two Jews, one Muslim, one woman from India who may be either Hindu or Jain, we used to have one Buddhist. Most people at my work place don't openly profess any religion.

I'm Baha'i, I have one co-worker who was raised Baha'i but she doesn't get involved in Baha'i activities. My wife is Hindu. I have Baha'i and Hindu pictures and artwork in my office. I also have a Qur'an and other religious books including Baha'i, Taoist, Sufi and Buddhist writings. I have Hindu and Muslim prayer beads openly displayed. Nobody has ever complained about the religious stuff I have in my office. I don't say anything about religion unless somebody asks me.

I did feel like I was being harassed at one time, but that had to do with my having a history of depression, anxiety and panic attacks. I got a letter from my doctor and the harassment stopped.

We also have a lot of openly gay people at my work place. A couple of times somebody said something controversial about gays but it never got to be a major problem for anyone as far as I know.

I used to be in a local band that was pretty popular and I had a band flier on my wall that my boss made me remove (the name of the band had the word "murder" in it). I was a little annoyed about it at the time.

Your post is fictitious, but religious freedom is an endowment of the Creator. The First Amendment states:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

Distributing Christmas cards is certainly a type of religious exercise that cannot legally be prohibited in the US.

    Cheers,

    Bruce

  • Try this bible verse next time I think it is Luke 19 : 27 " Bring my enemies here before me, so that I may watch you sly them " Jesus Christ. That will scare the hell out of her.

Source(s): The new testament KJV of the holy bible. I strongly suggest you leave your nonsense at home, and concentrate on doing your job.

To be accurate Holiday is more accurate than what you write because Christmas is the hijacked pagan festival of Yuletide.

If you use your religion to be vile and insulting and to persecute others you deserve the same.

  • Heu... Religion freedom in a self declared Islamic state with Islamic laws that rule...??? Is that Possible...???

There's a lovely verse about some bears and some children. Bears and children, what's more loving and Christians than that?

Freedom of religion includes freedom from religion. You are entitled to hold your religious views, you are not entitled to impose them on anyone else.
