A gift would be appropriate but probably not required/expected. Some options would be a small flower arrangement, bottle of wine, Christmas ornament.

not at all, you women are godsends to retail stores needing to bring presents to every damn thing you go to, you said casual gathering so if that was a summer time thing it would be a bbq to me and there is no way anyone in there right mind would bring a damn gift to a bbq
