Why don't Americans start using the $1 coin?

Again the topic is coming to debate about using the 1 dollar coin. People have looked at the coin as a novelty and stored them in shoe boxes, milk jugs , you name it did everything with them but do what was intended.....spend them.

All the leading countries have suspended their paper 1 dollar bill...so why don't we.??

I know people don't like change. That is one reason. The coin , people said take up too much room...What?...look on your person, how many dollar bills do you actually have on you?....you might have 4 at the most.

Canada in the late 1987 introduced the coin and immediately yanked the paper...thats how you get people to use it.

Maybe this government is afraid of upsetting people. If they want the people to use it...take out the paper....i'm all for it.

Update:

if you can't tell the difference between a quarter and a gold dollar coin...geez......all the bills are the same size and you can the difference between them........use your eyes

We had the Susan B Anthony coin and obviously they don't make them any more because people didn't want them

Do you remember that we had the 2 dollar bill..it flopped to

the government isn't upsetting us..you are making nonsense

Duh I never carry cash because of the invention called the "debit card"

It was people mistaking the Susie B for quarters; because they were the same size, shape, color, weight. Vending machines couldn't tell the difference at all. That is what soured the current generation. Dollar coins have been real unpopular for the past century. I carry quite a few singles in my pocket, don't want to be dragged down with excess coinage. Especially in my occupation. Too noisy, as well.

Um, wow. Where to start... Well, ignoring the poor grammar and spelling, let's see. Here, in the United States, the government still works for the people (so far, at least on paper)-not the other way around as in Socialist Dystopias, these so called "leading countries." In an allegedly free country, such as ours, WE tell the government what shall be done and it is SUPPOSED to do it. Again, not the other way around. This question is in a civics forum, I suggest you start taking some civics classes. Try a private university of some sort, one not infested with Marxist revolution flotsam and jetsam as you would find in Yale. Find some real teachers and read up on things. Or start by reading the works of John Taylor of Caroline, Charles Carroll of Carrollton or Patrick Henry. You can even stretch your limited intellect by reading the Anti Federalist papers. Those and Patrick Henry's different speeches and writings foretold the quagmire that is these United States.

OK, that was just childish and snarky. Obviously you did not have to tender these coins yourself. What is your damage, just out to troll a few boards? You asked a question and it was answered. People don't want them. If you want to use them then tear your a$$ down to the bank and get them. They are there for the using if YOU CHOOSE to take and use them. I am quite sure that the tellers would much rather give them to you then have to count and roll them at the end of the day because they don't want them either. I would be happy to have them if they had any real value, like the Morgan Dollars did, since it is all fiat currency now.

P.S.; Have YOU every tried to tip a dancer with a Sackyjawacky dollar coin?!?! They so get the wrong idea...

The last time we had a $1 coin (Susan B. Anthony) it was just about the same size as a quarter and that is what it was being mistaken for. Should they create a $1 coin it will have to be different than any other coin made and I don't think the idiots in government are capable of coming up with something unique.

I didn't imply that people could not tell the difference. Most people keep all coins in one area and when grabbing some change the $1 coin was the same size as the quarter. Next time I answer one of your idiotic questions I will do it as though I were explaining to a 2-year-old.

Beats me. I DO use them when I can but I rarely see them. I've never mistaken one for a quarter but perhaps I'm just gifted. And as for the idea that they're inconvenient to carry, I don't buy it. Who carries more than three or four one dollar bills anyway? Switching to coins would make no noticeable difference.

You know what? I think I'll put $20 worth of dollar coins in all the kids' stockings at Christmas. Too many to just squirrel away so they'll want to spend them. Maybe it will start a trend.

Americans don't like change (literally). They see everything as government interference. Canadians like the $1 coin, they last longer and are cheaper to make in the long run. But this means nothing to the average American citizen, it is all about their constitutional rights being abused.

Americans don't want a $1 coin, they want to retain the $1 bill.

The Government should be following the preferences of the people, not acting as a dictatorship (like in Canada) and forcing the change.

Probably because people don't like carrying them around

most consumers and merchants find them inconvenient

BTW, I have 9 ones in my wallet and 5 dollar coins sitting on my dresser, guess which will be with me when I go out?
