Cutting calories and working out but gaining weight?

Ive recently started working out again after an injury and I wanted to lose some fat so Ive been using MyFitnessPal to count calories and I set it to lose 2 pounds a week. Ive been around that level every week while working out and increasing weight too. Am I gaining weight from muscle or is it from something else? It says to intake a net of 1500 calories so I take in about 1900 and hit the bike and the weights to get rid of that extra 400

    Dan is right. But also, a couple things to add. You might very well be adding muscle so I suggest you invest in a bathroom scale that measures your body fat percentage. These scales are notoriously inaccurate, but they do give you a relative scale upon which to gage your progress.

    Also, from time to time during just about every weight-loss program, there is a point where we tend to plateau out for a week, or a month as your body goes into this survival mode of trying to hang on to its emergency fat reserves. It's very frustrating, but the only thing I can say there is grind it out, since you're basically at the start of your program. And just remind yourself that although you might not be losing weight, the exercise is doing other great things for your body.

    IF YOU WERE AT THE MIDDLE of your weight loss plan though, I'd suggest you actually go off your diet (but not your exercise program) for a couple days and eat whatever you want...this sometimes jump starts your metabolism (maybe by assuring your body that it isn't starving after all) and reignites the weight loss. However, I don't suggest that at the beginning of your program.

    But maybe something else to try is to replace some portion of your diet with some fat, like a hamburger patty. Some bodies need fat to burn fat.

    Umm there is your problem. Lifting weights won't really burn calories unless your are doing HIT (High Intensive Training) and it takes a while to burn 400 on the bike in a day.

    Also what are your calories from? Make sure you are getting mainly from protein and carbs while keeping fat lower. Also Sugar needs to be kept low too. No more than 25g of sugar a day. A single chocolate bar will put you over that limit.

    You may simply have an efficient body. Cut calories to 1500, but keep up the bike and the weights so you won't lose lean muscle mass, and don't forget to also count grams of fat. Try to keep them near 10-15 gm/day.

    I could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure they want you to take in only 1500 calories and still workout to burn off 400 calories. This would put you at 1100.

    Stop counting you re not going to be lose weight overnight Just concentrate on diet and exercise

    always have vegetables on hand saute a big bag of frozen mixed vegetables in olive oil and garlic add some red pepper or turmeric for additional flavor and separate into portion sized containers for the fridge
