Cleverness?
-Hansel and Gretel leave a trail of breadcrumbs, which was a good idea, even if the birds ate the crumbs.
-Also, when Hansel holds an old chicken bone out when the witch said "let me feel your finger to see if you've gotten any fatter."
-Also when Gretel makes sure the old witch can't see her sneaking up to push her in the oven because the witch's head is stuck in the oven.

Because the ***** is crazy.
The stepmother's attempt to lose them in the forest, the fact the witch wants to eat them, and it's gretel who kills the old woman by shoving her in an oven.
As the poet said
