Attaching a bigger screen to a MacBook laptop?

I have a MacBook Pro, and now I have to do some work requiring a bigger screen, multiple documents open, etc. Do I have to buy an Apple monitor (pretty expensive), or can a generic monitor work? Any recommendations?

A generic monitor can work, although you will need to buy an adapter, from Mini Display Port to VGA/HDMI (depending on monitor input). These can be bought from Apple, but (predictably) are pretty expensive for what they are, but there are alternatives you can buy online that do the same thing just without the brand name!

So you can buy any monitor, but you will need an adapter (such as the one here: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB572Z/B/mini-di...

You can buy a USB to VGA Cable and that would allow you to use any monitor for a computer.
