abnormal CBC results ?

I'm having knee surgery in about 2 weeks and my surgeon wanted a CBC and a Pregnancy test done before surgery. I'm not pregnant but some of my CBC results came back weird. my RBC was a little high, my MCV, MCH, and MCHC are all low my RDW is high my LYMPH# and LYMPH% are both a little high my RBC MORPH is abnormal and it says "SLIGHT" for POIK, ANISO, and CRENATED RBCS. My C02 is also a little bit low. I do have Thalassemia Minor and i'm recovering from a UTI so i don't know if that could have something to do with my abnormal results ? My GP said that nothing was so abnormal that it's a problem and he cleared me for surgery i'm just wondering what could cause all of those to be abnormal.

Thalassemia is the cause of your abnormal results. Most of the results you noted relate to the size and shape of your red blood cells. Because of your known Thalassemia, these results are nothing to be overly concerned about. The slightly high wbc counts are also nothing to be concerned about as long as the morphology of the wbcs are normal. I'm assuming that the wbc morph was normal, or your doc would have mentioned it to you. Best of luck with your surgery.

The results do not suggest Polycythemia since the RBC number is near normal, and even though the the platelet count is high, platelet counts can vary substantially from person-to-person, and this number is still within a range that is often seen in healthy people. High WBCs are not a good diagnostic of polycythemia because they naturally become elevated in response to an infection. Since you are a smoker, its possible that you have a low-grade sinus infection that you might not even be aware of. If you have any symptoms like chronic bad breath, post-nasal drip, or frequent sinus headaches, that would indicate a sinus infection. Otherwise, its not unusual for someone who is perfectly healthy to have several results outside the norms. Not meeting blood count norms is not a health problem if you do not have any symptoms caused by abnormal counts. What's important with results like these is to look for any notes indicating abnormal WBCs, particularly blast cells. If no blast cells or other cell abnormalities were noted, and you do not have any symptoms of anything, then you are fine. Retest in a few weeks if you are worried - maybe the WBCs will drop to normal.
