Differences between running an installer and launching a game?

Having a disagreement with a friend. He seems to think that if an installer takes a lot of RAM to run, just to install the game, it would take more RAM to play the game.

But am I right in saying that they are two completely different things?

Installing is simply extracting files to a new location, and launching a game and playing is simply running the program through the RAM and CPU? Playing the game uses, changes and creates files, but does not extract them?

That is my view.

He is saying that each time something happens in a game, files are extracted and changed, much like installing a game, where it extracts and relocates files.

But by his reasoning, he is saying that if an installer takes a lot of RAM to install a game, the game will take even more RAM.

We need a third party here. Who is right?

Well, techinically you are right and your Friend (and RXD are wrong).

Just because the installer takes a long time, it does not mean that the game will be utilising more memory. Take a game like WoW or FFXI for instance. The installers are HUGE. WoW for example is about 13GB I think but thats because it contains a lot of files, it doesnt mean that it will utilise more memory than a game that is 4GB like CoD or something, as CoD will use more memory than WoW.

The game will be loading different files into memory as it goes a long, it wont just load everything first off. Like when you load a level in Black Ops. It wont load every single level and every other file into its memory. It will load what it needs first of all. Thats why it takes a while for games to load

The first guy is clueless. The reason 360 owners say big whoop over the blu ray is because they don't have one. The movies are also no where near $45. Most are close to $26 and they go down from there. 360 has a hd dvd player add on that you have to pay extra for but they don't even make hd dvd movies anymore because blu ray won that war. The reason 360 has more games is because ----they came out a year earlier duh. 360 owners don't have a leg to stand anymore so they come up with stupid reasons to hate on the ps3 because they know its passing their unreliable system by. Some good exclusives that I have played for the PS3 is killzone 2 which is probably game of the year for the ps3 also Metal Gear Solid 4 which is also great and game of the year in 08 believe. The only reason the ps3 cost more is because it is better and comes out of the box with a ton more stuff then the 360. If you buy the basic 360 it can't even play some of the larger games like gta4. Then since you can't play these game you have to go out and buy a hard drive for another 80 bucks, then if you want internet you have to buy an adapter for another 50 or 60 bucks. On top of the $200 for the lowest system they have your already at about $340 and you still have no hd dvd player but it doesn't matter because they don't make them anymore anyway.

I can say that your friend is right . If a game is taking lot of time to install it means it has lot of code which means lot of pagination while playing game which means lot of RAM memory Consumption:)
