Final Fantasy 14 (XIV): A Realm Reborn Facts?
So, I pre-ordered the game and after participating in beta...cancelled my pre-order. lol Then, a week or two after launch I went ahead and purchased the game to give it one last try because I love Final Fantasy and grew up with it since the first one on Nintendo. However, as with many others, I found too many things wrong with the game that made it unbearable (mostly involving combat and an indepth crafting system with no Auction House available).
Anyways, I stopped playing obviously. Then, I started receiving the emails from Square Enix a few months ago about A Realm Reborn, so I checked it out and it seemed hopeful...or at least I was hopeful.
Last night I decided to follow-up on it to see if there were any videos on combat. So far the combat system seemed back in tune with FF XI where you can instantly use any of your skills and eventually build enough limit points to use a special move as opposed to the original release of FF14 where you had to auto-attack forever just to build points to use any of your skills....literally had me falling asleep in the game (first for an mmo for me).
Anyways, I'm hoping some people who have more knowledge on the subject can fill me in with the below questions. I've heard yes & no's on these questions, so what I'm looking for is "facts" not rumors/opinions/i'm-pretty-sure. If you have any links to articles/interviews on this it would be awesome. Thanks in advance!
1) I have the original FF14 game. Will I need to diss out another $50 for A Realm Reborn or can I just install my original game and download the updates/patches?
2) Will this new version of the game completely eradicate the original storyline? I'm curious if I'll have to continue with the new version/story or if I will still be able to play through the original storyline of the game to get the full experience before continuing with A Realm Reborn's storyline?
3) Release date? I heard Jan 2013 in forums.
4) Any PvP? I know in FF XI they had...Ballista is what I think it was called...but people rarely participated in it. PvP was never really a concern to the game-makers it seemed. Probably too hard to balance out 20 classes all of which can have sub-classes of the other classes. Not really a deal breaker for me. I love PvP....but I love storyline too and played FF XI for 5-6 years despite the lack of PvP.
Found some interview articles with the creators of the game online....
1) Didn't find anything on having to rebuy or not.
2) They noted that A Realm Reborn (version 2.0) takes place 5 years after version 1.0, which gives me the impression that we cannot play the original storyline at all.
3) Currently in Alpha, add in a couple of closed beta's and an open beta....possible Feb, but likely a March release if things go smooth.
4) They noted that there is going to PvP and they're going to try and have it ready & balanced for launch.

1) If you already have the FF14 game you won't have to purchase the new one. Once ARR comes out there should be a place in your account manager to download the new client. They would lose so many people if they had to shell out an additional amount of money for a new game when they bought one that wasn't out long and was complete crap.
3) The main GM in Alpha stated that they are releasing Beta soon and once everyone is satisfied with the way ARR has turned out it will go to Release. That could be Jan or even Mar. Just depends on how hard they are working to make things right with the mass of the community.
4) Have heard talks about PvP in the future but as of right now there is nothing in the game for it.

1) Yes it is a whole new game you have to pay for it again. But I think it is only going to be around $30 or $40.
2) I don't know honestly. According to the twitter feed FFXIV:ARR is in alpha test now. Story could change between now and then. I think it is all new content, but there are definatly things from FFXIV that could be recycled in the reboot.
3) Again ... alpha ... I think they will learn from their mistake and not push it out too quickly. They still need to hit beta before a final release so there will be some time.
4) I can neither confirm nor deny the answer to this question .... ..... ..........
That being avoided FFXI didn't have PvP for something like 2.5 years after release and that was just the add on Ballista that you already know about. I don't recall FFXIV ever having it in (although I didn't play much of it). Just by that information I don't think there will be.

1. Yes, you need to rebuy it.
2. You can not play or even view scenes from the original version. Real pity, that, had some very good things.
3. Jan 2013 is tentative, likely to change.
4. No PvP has been confirmed, but it's always possible.
