Is it time to put my dog down?

He's a 13.5 year old lab. He recently sprained his rear leg. Had him on pain meds and he started moving around again, but not 100%. Over the last couple of days, he's vomited 3 times, has been lethargic, and won't eat. I was hoping he would feel better once he got over the nausea and started eating again. That hasn't happened yet.

This is a really tough decision for me.

Talk to your vet about his symptoms and prognosis. Pain meds can mess with their appetite. See what your vet recommends.

If the pain meds you are using are in the NSAID class such as Rimadyl, metacam, etc., then there is a good possibility that the vomiting and lethargy is due to the medication, and a dog with an upset stomach will not eat. Don't give up yet, stop the pain meds and see what happens.

Switch to a good glucosamine product instead to help build stronger cartilege and help heal the sprained rear leg. Labs can live clear up to 17 years or longer.

the sprain will heal i agree with above. however 13 and half is years is getting up there. i think labs usually live around 15-16. I just had to put down my 16 year old dog in the summer because she was just miserable i could tell. she barely moved, she was going blind, and she would have cough attacks. it killed me to see her that way because i had her since i was 4 years old. in the end, i think it was better for her to be put out of her misery. it was one of the hardest things i have ever had to do. so take your dog to the vet first and see if it is something that can be fixed or get something for before making that decision

A sprain will heal. Vomiting and lethargic sounds like something else is going on.

I don't think you need to have him put down, but you DO need to get him to the vet to see what is wrong with him.

Sometimes pain meds will cause nausea and a decrease in appetite. PLease call your vet. They can help with this decision. So sorry for your situation. This is never an easy choice. Hang in there and give him a kiss on the nose for me.

No its not! Not over a sprained ankle.

I had to make this horrible decision, but my dog had congestive heart failure, liver disease and pancreatitis. Anyone of which ALONE would have killed her.

Please don't make such a drastic decision like that over a sprained ankle.

You should take him to the vet!
