What are the best children's books?
For younger kids, like 2-5 years old. My goddaughter loves books.

I would suggest Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". It's a classic children's book that is loved by children all over the world.
It is easy to read, has beautiful artistic pictures, an interesting layout on the pages, and a wonderful ending where the caterpillar turns into something grand.
It also inadvertently teaches numbers, the days of the week, names of food and other items.
As a teacher I highly recommend it. As an aunt, older cousin, and godmother myself, I have bought it many times and given it as gifts to younger members of my family, and friends kids.
You can't go wrong if you get this book.

I remember I used to love a book called "Maybe a Monster" by Martha Alexander.
Another one is "The Monster at the End of This Book". It is a sesame street book. it has Grover trying to convince the reader to stop turning pages because he heard there is a monster at the end. The illustrations are him building walls and tying pages together that are broken apart when you turn the page.
If you or your kids likes dogs, one of my ffavorites as a child was called "Bentley and Blueberry". It was published by the humane society.
Another of my childhood favorites was "the three little wolves and the big bad pig". It's a reversal of the classic story, very well done. The pig ends up not being so bad after all.
Another good one is Herbert the Lion by Clare Turlay Newberry.
All of those books have great illustrations that little kids love.
Glad to hear about kids who love books. Have fun reading with her :)

I can't say what's the best, but as a father of six I can say some of my favorites:
Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel
Bedtime for Francis (Or any of Russell Hoban's Francis books)
Jubal's Wish (Or anything by Audry Wood)
The Snowy Day
The Sneeches and other stories.
Anansi and the Moss covered Rock
Go Dog, Go
Sam and the Firefly
You may want to consider board books for a 2 year old. Sandra Boynton makes very good ones. So does Audry Wood.

Rumble in the jungle
Room on the broom
Giraffes can't dance
The hairy mclarey collection
All good rhyming stories with great colourful pictures. Always a hit!
You can also get Dear Zoo with bits to flip up to see what animal is in the box.
