Which laptop would you recommend for a mechanical engineer student?
I want to be able to surf the web, stream videos, listen to music, write papers, run CAD programs, and do some graphic editing. I don't do any gaming or any of that!
Obviously I'm looking for the best bang for my buck when it comes to a fairly small, lightweight, reliable, and fast laptop. I prefer windows 8, and if I'm going to get one, I want it to be as up to date as possible. I'd like to stick to a $500-600 price range tops, but I could save up some extra if it's worth it.
Also, do you have any recommendations for the best free or affordable CAD programs or other programs that could be useful for mechanical engineering?

If you're doing mechanical engineering you'll need to be well knowledged in Solidworks, AutoDesk Inventor, and AutoCAD, and I'd be surprised if a $500-600 laptop could run any of them WELL. They could probably all get by, but actually using the programs effectively on a budget laptop would be difficult.
If you're a student, look to see if you have any student discounts with AutoDesk, as that gives you access to discounted versions of Inventor and AutoCAD.

All Ill say is you will need to be working at quite high resolutions but that doesnt mean you need a fancy video card etc those process all the physics and 3d so most mid priced machines will do the trick.
Sorry I know nothing about CAD other than it stands for computer aided Design, I may be wrong even there and my brain doesnt work in Dollars ..
