Is this baseball card collection worth anything?

My husband's parents cleaned out their basement and sent him his childhood baseball card collection, and I've been given the task of selling them. There are about a thousand cards, maybe more. They're all from late 80s through late 90s and don't seem particularly valuable from what I can tell based off a few Google searches, except for about half a dozen rare/collectible cards he has in separate cases that seem to be worth $2-14 each. I've checked with a couple local card shops (I live in Chicago), and no one seems interested. Do I stand any chance at selling them as a single lot on ebay? Should we just sell the more valuable cards separately? Any advice from someone who knows what they're talking about would be helpful. Thanks!!

The market was flooded with cards in the late 80's and early 90's. Way to many cards were produced so supply far exceeded the demand. Everybody that wants cards from the period already have them and if they don't they can get them very easily.

Now even though you say some cards are "worth" $2-14 each that may not be so. Just because somebody is trying to sell a card for $14 doesn't mean it's worth that much. They may have it way overpriced and somebody else could be selling the exact same card for $1. The best way to get a true estimate on value is to check the completed auctions on ebay. That will tell you what people are willing to pay.

Now while 99.99% of cards from the late 80's and early 90's are bascially worthless there are a few exceptions. The 1989 Upper Deck set as some value especially Ken Griffey's rookie card. Not know how many "valuable" cards you have and what they are, it could still be worthwhile to sell those on ebay. Putting all of the cards on there as one lot wouldn't be worth the shipping costs to you or the buyer.

I would suggest selling some of the ones you think might bring you some money. Maybe you'll make enough for a night out. The rest of them should be donated to a local children's hospital or youth group and then you could use the "book" price of the cards as a tax write off which would most likely be better than trying to sell them. Good luck!
