How do real estate companies find out that I'm APPLYING for license?

I've been receiving mailers from real estate brokerages in California that are offering me "crash courses" since I am soon to be taking my real estate exam. How are they finding my information out?

Could anyone give me any specific sources?

This is public information. In Texas I used to pay a fee to the state and get the fresh list of names and addresses every week.
