Maintenance free means you leave it alone, they aren't filler caps, they're how the electrolyte was put into the battery in the first place, and they can be unscrewed for venting if charging with high current. As with most things on cars, if you don't understand it then just leave it alone!

Guess what! Fortunately for you when you see six filler caps on a 12 volt battery that you already own it's not maintenance free. Fill each cell to the bottom black plastic ring under the cap with distilled water.

Hi actually most have it wrong only timbo has it right used to fill up when new not intended for use as a top up. the battery has gone past it's best when it needs to replaced these things show there age at the colder times of the year and it is usually when most will not start due to chemical action in the battery and a cold climate.
so replace the battery after 2-5 years dependant on what sort of battery a heavy duty will last longer of course.

your no longer meant to open the sealed perfect of a upkeep loose battery, they dont favor maiintaining, really the shape of battery that needs water(distilled is a large determination)are water-holding batteries...they have spouts, and cells ,and a water perfect-off line,it extremely is form of a one-way verify valve,no longer allowing water to bypass bypass a particular aspect....

If there isn't any water in the battery, you'll want to add electrolytic solution. If one or more of the cells is just a little low, adding distilled water is good but you can get away just fine with plain tap water. As long as level is above the plate in each cell that's what matters.
