Best way to travel from Melbourne to Brisbane/Cairns?

I have been to Australia a few times now, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, and I'm off again next week until August 10th when I will go to Bali or Singapore on my way home to the UK.

I'll be starting in Melbourne, and spending most of my time there as I will be living with my mate and can have the room until when ever I want. I want to go to Brisbane, Gold Coast and Cairns while I'm in Australia this time too.

I would like to avoid air travel as I've done a lot this year and it's starting to grate on me and ruin my ears, and I don't really want to hire a car, although I could to get from Cairns to Brisbane, or Brisbane to Cairns, if that's worth driving? How long would that take?

I don't want to spend loads, flights are around $210ASD one way from Melbourne to either city, so that would be my budget, maybe $250. IF I did end up choosing to fly, which should I go to first, Brisbane/GC or Cairns, or doesn't it matter in July?

Would it be a worthwhile journey to do by train, and how long would it take? I believe from Melbourne you go to Sydney, then up the east coast, so I'd be stopping in GC first. What sort of prices are you looking at for a first class ticket?

Update:

Thanks for the Greyhound idea, I hadn't thought of that. I am very tall so I always need comfort when travelling, and not sure what the seats look like. I will look into it though.

If you are tall, you won't be comfortable on the bus. I'm 194cm so I know. Buses are not designed for anyone tall. Your knees will be jammed against the seat in front and when the occupant of the seat in front puts the seat back, you have your own version of hell. Some buses do have a couple of seats with extra leg room. You should ask about those but often they are given to people of ordinary height while tall people are sat next to each other wishing they could unscrew their legs and put them in the baggage rack.

Melbourne to the Gold Coast is about 24 hours by bus. GC to Brisbane is another hour to 90 minutes and Brisbane to Cairns is again the best part of 24 hours or more. The train is more expensive but far more comfortable. When you factor in the meals on the way, however, the cheapest and most comfortable option is flying. If you are on your own, hiring a car and driving would be the most expensive option.

There are various options for train travel and from Melbourne to Brisbane you have the choice of day or night trains. I do the Sydney-Brisbane leg quite frequently and always take the day train. It is more comfortable and you see more. First class is a lot more expensive than economy. You can get a flexible economy ticket from Melbourne to Cairns for $450.45 http://www.countrylink.info/travel_passes/discover...

It would be worth checking out other fare options and the cost of first class. On trains such as the Sydney/Brisbane XPT the sleeper cabins are converted into three seat cabinettes during the day and you can book a seat in one of those. It costs more than first class but four times out of five when I have taken the train I have had one completely to myself. If you want lots of leg room and comfort, that's the way to go.

    Train From Melbourne To Brisbane

You could go on the ozexperience bus (you can get on and off too, so if you wanted to spend a week in Sydney you could). Probably a bit pricier than Greyhound but may go to more off the beat areas.

You could mix and match it though with Greyhound. For example Dubbo is supposed to be really good, so you could do that and then head to Sydney...

    Train is always an option.

Marc, I would agree with Marc on the train or coach idea, on a long journey like that I would consider train for your height.

I'm 5'10" I used to take Greyhound from Montreal to our office in New York, then I switched to Amtrak. By train it would be a considerable amount more than by coach. Weigh your options.

Maybe another option might be to buy a Greyhound pass ...you can tailor it to your itinerary & it will give you complete flexibility .

Added bonus is that from a coach you will actually see some of the countryside ..
