how do I potty train a puppy when I work days and my wife works nights?
We've tried using the same spots and letting him relieve himself on his pads when one or the other of us is sleeping. He seems to feel that anywhere that the mood suits him is an ok spot. He will usually go outside if one of us is awake and we try to keep a schedule with him, but the accidents are getting more frequent rather than the other way around. We can't cure our work schedules, but need help as to why he is rejecting earlier training that was going well.

The pads can confuse a puppy as to the difference between inside and out. You see a pad, he see's inside.
For all he knows, everything inside is a pad
A puppy will nearly always pee when it wakes from a nap or sleep, after eating, and when it finishes playing.
(There are others, but those 3 are set in stone)
Take him straight out after he wakes (its wake, stretch, pee in quick order), after he has eaten, and after he loses a little interest in playing.
Repeat your preferred command (Mine is "Toilet")
When he pees, praise him and give him a little treat, he will quickly learn.
If you miss the chance and he pees inside, scold him with a gruff voice, take him straight outside for 5-10 minutes (No concept of time and will quickly forget why he is in trouble)
If both you and your wife stick to the same consistent patterns, it will make things easier, since even a slight variation can confuse them also

A puppy needs to be taken outside; every thirty minutes, after it eats, immediately in the morning, after it naps , after it plays and right before bed. Make a schedule and stick to it, if you're not consistent in training the dog won't be able to learn. It takes months for a puppy to become house-trained. It won't happen overnight or in a week. Your wife can take him out during the day, you can take him out at night. He will also need to be taken outside a few times through the night until he gets better bladder control-crate him when you cannot watch him(no longer then two hour periods).
Also; get rid of the pads-this just encourages a dog to eliminate anywhere in the household. He's a puppy-you need to be consistent in training, they don't automatically go outside-you need to keep up on taking him outside.

i replaced into going to propose crate education until eventually I study you tale. So i imagine that you ought to adhere to the newspapers and wee-wee pads (yet get the pads that scent of grass, so as that he will quickly do not ignore that going on the grass is okay). placed the newspapers everywhere contained in the room. Be consistent, whenever you're at abode, watch him each and each and every of the time. Everytime he squats to pee, raise him up and take him to the newspapers/pads and say "go potty" and at the same time as he does praise him like mad! lol! Then if he makes a mistake purely say "no" in an organization voice and ignore about him. quickly at the same time as he starts going on the newspapers you may start to eliminate a number of the newspapers, and slowly eliminate further and extra universal until eventually he's left with a small nook to apply. From this you may slowly initiate to take him outdoors to get him off the newspaper, and lasting all day until eventually you come back abode from artwork (yet this coud take a lengthy time period!) Is there besides you'll get a pal to come back at lunch to feed the puppy/ ake him out to the lavatory and play with him for a lengthy time period?? or you and your spouse ought to come abode for lunch?? each and each and every of the most suitable with your pup!

The others are correct. You are confusing the dog by letting him potty in the house (pads) sometimes and others making him go out.
You should get a book and cage train him. it works!

You guys really thought this through before you go the dog.
You are training the dog to pee in the house, the dog doesn't understand that it's only okay to pee in certain parts of the house.
