When do you start feeding puppies and giving them water?
I found this dog-- or more the dog found me- and I could tell she was pregnant-- she already had milk and everything. So I brought her inside and made her a bed, trying to make her comfy. She had 11 (yes 11!!) puppies the next morning! I was so shocked- because she was only a medium sized dog and I don't know much about whelping and stuff. The puppies are now 3 (4 Sunday) weeks old and are still nursing, but I am worried they are dehydrated- should I offer them water? When should I feed them? I would appreciate some help-- I was going to call my local animal shelter and ask them, but they are closed right now for renos or something weird like that and I just don't want anything to happen to these poor cuties-- Mom is eating and drinking fine.
All the puppies are healthy and fat, but I am just being paranoid and I am also just curious to know- Any advice would be appreciated.
Also, I do have 4 or 5 people who want a puppy already (yea) and if one or two don't find homes I will just keep them (I have 20 acres) So nobody has to worry about them getting good homes :) Poor momma dog! Someone should have spayed her before this happened-- and not dumped her in the middle of no where--- Thanks in advance!

Pinch the skin and see if it quickly returns to normal. If so, they are NOT dehydrated. Mother dogs are quite capable of feeding 11 puppies as the more they nurse the more milk is produced, unless of course there is a problem with "mama".
At three weeks you can now wean them off the dam completely. Get a good puppy kibble, moisten it with WATER (warmed) put it in a pan with a low edge placing the pups around it and put a bit on their noses to get them started. Some breeders like to start them on baby food, but I found the canned puppy formulas work better and are more balanced. They do NOT need milk once you start weaning. They should easily be off mom a week after you start this.

I had a dog who whelped 10 puppies and I knew she would not be able to properly feed all of them. I got the formula for puppies and each time she nursed I would feed 3 of them, different ones each time. This as around the clock but once they started taking the bottle it was not so bad. I kept this up for 4 weeks and at that point the pups would eat canned puppy food. They all grew up to be healthy dogs. You may want to try this or start them on water if you think they are getting enough milk from mom.

Go to a Petsmart or Petco if you have one near to you they have a special formula for puppies, if you don't have Petsmart or petco call them and tell them what happened and ask for their advice they know about things like that problem. They will start eating when their about 6 weeks old. Just make sure the mother has enough food, and maybe the pet stores can give you something for the dog so she can produce more milk.Try it and call you have nothing to lose. GOOD LUCK!

You may think that you are going to do alright by this puppy, but you have cheated her from learning the things she needs to learn from her mother and siblings. I'm sure it is something you will regret later. From her mother she will learn the body language of other dogs. She still has to learn what it means to be a dog. Without this knowledge she will not be able to understand what other dogs are saying to her. Most likely she will be afraid of other dogs. She will attack them or run and hide. You should return her to her mom and siblings. You have the rest of her life to be with her. Do you want a dog that is good with other dogs? Do you want her to be a well adjusted adult dog someday? If she doesn't learn this now she will grow up to be an unhappy and unbalanced dog. This poor girl isn't even weaned yet. Why are you doing this to her? do you not care about this poor girl? Take her home and let mom teach her and wean her Please!!!! If you don't I guarantee you'll deeply regret it later. If she attacks other dogs when she's older they will probably demand her life to be over. Think of what you are doing to her.

First of all , i'd like to say that you did a very nice thing by helping out the female dog . Secondly , you can start feeding the puppies after they start growing some teeth , approx 6 weeks old .

i start my pups on milk at 4 wks of age. i get the puppy formula and make sure its warm. not too hot or too cold. dip there nose in it and they will start to lick it off. they will start to drink and still nurse.
At five weeks they should be drinking milk good so i soften puppy food or get canned food and get them to eat that. and by 7 weeks of age they should be eatting semi hard food. (soft with a little hardness to it. and by 8 weeks eating pure hard puppy chow.
