It would certainly help to know where in Texas you'll be moving, but I'll try and give you the basics anyway.
Believe me - you will like Texas. Not only is the state naturally beautiful, but the people here are the nicest you've ever met. In addition, there are endless sources of entertainment, the food is superb, and international culture abounds.
Now, let's remember a few things: a lot of people who are not from Texas (especially those from California or northern states, such as yourself) have a tendency to have a picture of Texas in their heads as a barren, desert wasteland where everyone owns a ranch and rides a horse to work - we all speak with a deep, southern drawl, wear our ten-gallon hats and boots everywhere, and have IQs maxing out at around 15. Needless to say, that is wholly untrue. I am by no means trying to assume your own opinions, but I feel such clarification is only prudent. I advise you to go online and look up images of the Texas Hill Country or Piney Woods; check out our flagship universities, both in the Top 10 for enrollment nationwide; or find a list of the Fortune 500 companies based here (57 - tied for 1st in the country).
The big question, of course, is, "What is there to do?" Quite frankly, a lot. In a state slightly larger than France, there are plenty of places to visit that are well worth your time. There are six major cities, for starters (Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso), each with their own sights and sounds, like the Alamo; the Fort Worth Stockyards; the State Capitol building; and the Johnson Space Center. However, the best part are the parks and small towns in between. You could visit Marfa, home to a century-old enigma; Lexington or New Braunfels for some of the world's best barbecue; Big Bend or Guadalupe Mountains National Parks for some gorgeous scenery and great hiking; or Corpus Christi or Galveston for a swim in the Gulf. There are also a range of sports venues, from the Dallas Cowboys to the Houston Texans; and the Houston Astros to the Texas Rangers (the only one of the bunch which seems to be able to win anything).
In terms of living, I'll be brief. Accomodations in the larger cities and their suburbs are usually pretty nice. However, as in all metropolitan areas, crime can sometimes be a factor to consider. Work is not a problem, as Texas was barely affected by the Recession. Also, Texas has no state income tax, so you get to keep a little extra at the end of the month. You being from Michigan, I might assume that you lean towards liberal politics - if so, there are many large pockets of Democratic supporters in each city, with some cities even voting Democrat in the last election. If, however, you prefer a conservative view...well, it's Texas, isn't it? I might also add that temperatures can skyrocket in the summer months, but the rest of the year is usually fairly mild and comfortable, depending on where you live.
My very best wishes to you as you make your move to the great southwest. I hope you enjoy yourself here. Welcome to Texas!

Don't worry.I live in Texas and I love it.But it also depends. If you are going to live in a city like Dallas,Austin or San Antonio, then be careful. There could be crime in them.I used to live in Dallas, but we moved cause of all the traffic and stuff.Right now I live in a ranch and its all right. So welcome to Texas.
