Yeah, you can. There are many bakeries that sell gluten free and vegetarian sweets, and meringues are one of them. They use substitutes, you know, gluten free, egg free... A friend of mine once explained to me how it's done. She says that you'll need: 1/2 cup an egg free product (she told me the name of the one that she use, i think it's orgran no egg...or organ no egg...something like it), ½ teaspoon of citrus pectin, 1 cup of ice cold water, 1 teaspoon vanilla essence and 3/4 cup icing sugar.

Preheat oven to 130° (250°F). Blend the no egg and citrus pectin together thoroughly while dry and then add to cold water in a mixing bowl. Mix on high for about 5 minutes. Add vanilla essence and 1 tablespoon of sugar at a time, and continue mixing on high for more 5 minutes (the foam will increase in volume). Spoon (or use a piping bag) meringues on a tray lined with baking paper. Bake at 130°C for about 2 hours. After 2 hours, turn the oven off without opening the door allowing the meringues to dry out until the oven is cool. If not eating immediately, put in an airtight container.

I arrived at my friend's house when she was almost finished with baking the meringues...so i just saw the final part of the thing. I wrote down the recipe after I ate some of them (very good, if you ask me) and, according to my friend, they were egg free. I've never tested the recipe by myself though.

There are three ways to make meringue. http://www.barryfarm.com/How_tos/how_to_meringue.h...

    1. The traditional way is with egg whites. You need three eggs, at room temperature, separated. Place the egg whites in a bowl and add a pinch of salt. Using a mixer, beat the whites until frothy. Begin adding a half a cup of sugar, a little at a time as you beat the whites. Continue beating until stiff peaks form.

    2. You can use egg white powder. You need 1/2 c of warm water in which you dissolve 3/4 c sugar, 1/2 t. cream of tartar and 1/4 c dried egg white powder. Blend them together and then beat them until they form stiff peaks.

    3. You can use meringue powder. You need 1/2 c hot water in which you dissolve 3/4 c sugar. Add 1/4 c. meringue powder. Blend together and beat until the mix forms stiff peaks.

Use this meringue on pies, in angel food cake, to make meringue shells, cover baked Alaska or soufflé recipes.

No. There are other toppings you can make, but without egg whites they won't be meringue.

On the plant it is just a fruit, off the flower it is just a vegetable

I like fruits over vegetables because I feel that fruits just feel "fresher" somehow.
