A lead shot of mass 600g is heated to 100 C and placed in an aluminum can of mass 200g. Which contains 500g of water initially at 17.5 C. The specific heat of the aluminum can is 0.215 cal/g. The final temp of the mixture is 20 C. what is the specific heat of lead?

Heat energy flows from the high temperature lead shot to the water and can, until the temperature of lead shot, water, and can is 20˚. Since the can contains 500g of water, the temperature of the can is the same as the water.

Heat energy released from the lead shot = Heat energy absorbed by the water and can

    ∆ Q = mass * Specific heat * ∆T

    For the lead shot, ∆T = 100 – 20 = 80

    ∆ Q = 600 * Sp.ht. * 80

    For the water and can, ∆T = 20 – 17.5 = 2.5

    Specific heat of water = 1 cal/g* ˚C

    For the water, ∆ Q = 500 * 1 * 2.5

    For the can, ∆ Q = 200 * 0.215 * 2.5

    600 * Sp.ht. * 80 = 500 * 1 * 2.5 + 200 * 0.215 * 2.5
