What to do with when flash drive says "You need to format the disk before you can use it."?

Windows 7 says I need to format my flash drive before using it. No problem. I have the files backed up on the computer. Is it worth formatting and reusing? Has anyone had experience with it? If it is just going to break again, I would throw it out. Any idea why it needs to be formatted?

this is probably on the point of complete or the format on this is corrupt. attempt to get your paper off of thepersistent then reformat it. Dont format it with the paper on it. it will be lost then. attempt a distinct USB plug too.

if there are files on it , it just means the power from the USB socket is not enough to scan the file system, replug in a different socket and try plugging in while windows explorer is running

flash isn't meant for long term storage, use it while it works and keep backing up.
