Can I cook a turkey in a portable roaster oven with no removable rack in the roasting pan?
I just purchased a Sunbeam 16 quart roaster and just realized I purchased the model that does not have a removable rack or grill in the pan. I was hoping to cook a holiday turkey in it but was wondering what are the issues related to resting a turkey on the bottom of a bare pan? I assumed the turkey would be slightly elevated on a rack, but did not do my homework before I ordered. I really do not want to buy a second roaster, does anyone know if purchasing a removable rack for a roasting pan is a common item and is something that could be matched up with a 16 quart Sunbeam?

I have tried calling Sunbeam customer service but no one is answering until 9am Monday. All advice welcome

I'm sure you can buy one but you can also use celery sticks, and onion slices for flavor, anx to raise the bird.

If it were me, I'd make a real thick layer of root vegetables; potatoes, carrots, onions quartered, and lots of celery stalks rough cut. Place the turkey on top of that and if you put enough chunky cut vegetables down, the turkey won't stick to the bottom of the roaster. If you go out and buy a roasting rack, it might elevate the turkey so much that you can't get the lid on properly. Although you might be able to buy a grate to fit in and keep the turkey out of the fat that cooks out of the turkey. Something like this...

You probably already have something like that on hand.
You could even squish up some aluminum foil to rest the turkey on.

Use an upside down ovenproof plate or shallow bowl instead of a rack - or see if the dollar store racks will help you. Processors put a huge amount of liquid in poultry - up to 20%. You need to get the bird above the juice that bakes out or you will be boiling it. I'd check on the liquid level every hour or so and use a baster to take out the excess juice. Don't toss it, it makes pretty good gravy.

Dont worry about spending more money. any trivet will do. Cut up chunky veges - carrots, onions potatoes. just wash dont skin. add a little liquid and place turkey on top. It doesnt matter if veges get over brown as you dont have to use these. but they do make a good base for a gravy

the bird will stick to the bottom and ruin the ability to get it out whole. You can buy lifters at most hardware outlets that may act as a replacement rack.

If you can find them, wire cooling racks will work. Or you could use a wire trivet.
