Why do some people believe that guns will protect them from the government?

If the government really wanted to take your guns, they easily could, Pistols and semi-automatics are not going to save you from drone strikes . Do you honestly think that you could put up a minuscule threat against that type of overwhelming force? Now in the case of self defense against home invaders they will probably end up saving you, but if you think that your guns can save you from the government you're a fool. I just want to know why some people think that hoarding guns will "protect" them against a highly armed invader.

Update:

@TheBootyKing In 1999 India and Pakistan had a border conflict in which 950 died ,both states have nuclear weapons and when they went to war they had nuclear weapons.

could over a hundred million gun owners put up a threat? Well, yeah.

And as for armed civilians posing a threat against a better armed and technologically advanced invader....google "Vietnam" and "Afghanistan", and get back to me. If a handful of illiterate goat herders armed with ancient soviet rifles and pakistani knockoffs can hold a coalition of the most advanced armies in the world to a stalemate for 11 years, a few million well-educated, highly motivated Americans can do a hell of a lot more.

If the question is referring to the 2nd Amendment, then "arms" includes more than guns. It's a version of "mutually assured destruction." The rationale for it, is it seems to work. No nuclear country has ever declared war on any other. In order to protect ones self from the governrnment, one must be as well armed as said government.

I doubt the entire army would go alone with the plans to obey the government. Thousands of armed citizens with guns, plus disobedient soldiers.... yeah. We could take them on, and put up a good fight. Another example, in Nazi Germany soldiers would come during the night and kidnap people. Now, Americans with guns in their nightstand are going to be harder to kidnap. I believe we need guns in order to protect ourselves from the government, but at the same time I believe murder is wrong, in any case. Even in self defense. So... I'm conflicted on the matter!

I have 17yrs service. Most people I know are all vets. You obviously don't know what you are talking about. Do you know how many armed vets there are in the US? How many Drones do you think we have? What would be the drones target? Drones would be almost ineffective in an unconventional war.

They would need police and guardsmen going door to door. The armed populace out numbers them 60 to 1 and that is just talking legally owned. These are real numbers. I just got out. Do you know how easy I could slip on a base? I still have ID, almost everyone I know is retired from the military, or in reserves. Do you think they would follow these unlawful orders?

first of all it is illegal for the US government to use military forces against its own people and the military personnel know that and swear an oath to that effect when they join the military. Secondly the military shall always remain subordinate to the civil power. The President is commander and chief of the military but no armed services personnel is required to follow orders to fire upon US citizens.

Now with that being said, who exactly do you think is controlling those drones, jet fighters and bombers? US soldiers subordinate to the civil power. And do you really think they are going to fire rockets and drop bombs on their family and friends?

Not going to happen and the reason the US government hasn't already over reached their limited powers in office is because we are armed citizens defending our constitutional rights.

Yeah, I remember that not working out so well in 1775.

Hey, by the way, who exactly do you expect to be carrying out that order? Because I am authorized and required by the Universal Code of Military Justice to refuse any unlawful order. People like me fly the drones, kick in the doors, and, frankly, the Feds could take this job and shove it if they want a home front invasion.

But that will never happen, because there are some 300 Million gun owners that the Federal Government doesn't want to deal with, and there's plenty of us in office.

It's simple, look at the Arab Spring, and what's happening in Syria right now. Don't underestimate the power of few guns in hands of a small group of people who are so tired of being screwed over by their government that they just don't give a sh*t anymore. It seems like the British did that a couple hundred years ago, and it didn't work out so well for them. In fact I think it lead to the creation of some country or other.

Besides, as my Dad is fond of saying "Everybody gotta die a sumthin" and I can think of a lot of worse ways to go than dying for something you believe in.

If you read the 2nd amendment in it's entirety and in context, then it was obvious the founders wanted a ready militia to repel an armed invader like a revenging England for example. That's why you never see 2nd amendment quotes from pro gun people include the "well regulated" militia part.

drone with hellfire missiles or a 20 million dollar helicopter with helmet targeting system. not much chance my rifles could stop that. But i bet a few of my friends and i with our training could gain access to enough weaponry to do some real damage. I bet im not the only one thinking this even in my county. I can only imagine it would be bloody and awful but they'd really have to defend themselves well

Because they're nuttier than squirrel sh!t in a pecan orchard.

I'm a gun owner and a pretty staunch defender of the 2nd Amendment, but I'm content to hunt and target practice with my guns. I also like to have one along just in case I end up with some fighting chance to save myself or others from a gun-wielding psychopath.

The government, I figure, would outgun the hell out of me if it came to that.
