What happens when you feed your dog the wrong dog food?
My dogs weigh 30-35lbs and I accidentally bought weight control dog food for 50lb dogs. Can I still feed it to them? I already opened it and can't take it back to the store.

Most of these 'purpose made' dog food is just a scam. Feed it to your dogs, and then buy them the right food next time. If you get any kind of reaction immediately, then bin it and buy better next time much as I can't see this being a problem. Fact is breed-specific food doesn't mean a thing - compare the ingredients and you'll not find much difference between the different bags.

It is usual when changing dog food, to add a small % of the new food into the existing food. Often when you fail to do this the dog can get an upset tummy. As you haven't mentioned an upset this may be irrelevant.
Most dog foods are not breed pacific, perhaps you will need to feed it more of the weight control stuff if you don't want your dog to loose weight. Or you could get a bag of the food that you have used in the past and mix them.
Your dog will cope

That hit my funny bone! Not only a "diet" food for dogs, but a diet food for dogs that weigh around 50 pounds. What will they think of next to sell product? A food for 25 pound brown dogs - feed this and really bring out their brown highlights! But if you have a brown and white dog, then you need a different food. Ridiculous marketing strategies, but I guess they work.
Weight reduction foods simply add even more fillers than usually found in lower quality brands. So your dogs will produce more poop because they are digesting less.

If your dog is in good weight or thin, this would not be a good food. The food would be the same for all sizes of overweight dogs. the kibble is just bigger for the 50# ones. Some stores will take the food back. Most premium diets have a 100% guarantee.

If a human prefers not to eat meat, that's their choice. Dogs don't have a choice, when kept as a domesticated animal. They are meant to eat meat, so as far as I'm concerned, forcing a dog to become a vegetarian isn't an option. If a vegetarian prefers not to have to handle meat (and feeding a complete diet means the meat isn't obvious in any case), maybe keeping a dog isn't for them. I don't look at this as being selfish, but rather not keeping a dog correctly.

It will be just fine. Weight control food has the same nutrition as regular food, but with fewer calories to prevent weight gain. You may need to add 1/4 of a cup more food in a day to make up for the lost calories, but that's it. Your dog will be fine.

No you cannot take it back, though you could donate it to your local dog rescue place.
To avoid bad diarrhea and gas change your dog to this new food gradually over a week (you may have to get some of the old.)

Yes. Don't worry, you can feed it to them. If you wanted to, and can afford to, get a bag of their regular food and mix them so that you don't waste the new food. But if you can't do that, it wont hurt your dogs at all to eat the new food until you can get them their regular food.

Yes your dogs will eat it and non prolonged use will not harm the dog either in fact they will highly likely be very grateful for you feeding them. As they normally are.
