I absolutely agree with Morgan Freeman, the actor, who said the following. What about all of you?

I didn't catch what the actual question he was asked was but this is his answer.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

I myself think the media causes more problems than good. The reporters have to be the first to report something no matter if they have no idea what is going on. At first, with this shooting, we heard he went in and killed his mother and her class and there were 2 shooters. Hours later we heard he acted alone with 2 guns and killed his mom at home and she was not employed by the school.

What is scary is that he is right when he says there is someone out there right now who wants to be a bigger name than this nobody individual who killed all these people. One person on here said he was glad his parents had him in private school and he has his kids in private as well as there has never been a shooting ina private school. Ah, not yet there hasn't. (and to him I add, not everyone can afford private school).

Yea he's pretty much right on the money there. But good luck trying to change the media. They're vultures who all wanna get the breaking news and interviews and pictures first. They don't care what repercussions come from it because they feel they can exploit all those stories too. They can hide behind their "freedom of the press" creds because they're only in it for viewership and money.

Some of the amendments need amending. When they were drawn up, some aspects were not relevant as to how today's society runs. I'm sure when the freedom of the press was enacted, they never could conceive things like current methods of travel, tv cameras, internet etc. which all can lead to rapid sensationalism.

  • absolutely, Morgan Freeman is an absolute god
