Third umpire getting payed to sit there and sleep?

One of the Australian commentators made a good suggestion yesterday. They said instead of DRS ,When a batsmen is given out, and the first replay shows that he wasn't out, the 3rd Umpire can ask the batsmen to return to the crease. Same goes if the original decision was not out. If the first replay show it was indeed out, the 3rd umpire can call the on field umpire to change the decision. How this differs from DRS is that it takes away player involvement in umpiring.

TL;DR? Remove DRS, Have 3rd umpire monitor all decisions and make changes acccording to the first replay shown.

What do you think of this suggestion?

No, leave the DRS as it is. The third umpire involvement was tried in the Ryobi Cup here and was very unpopular with both players and fans. As well we have seen a couple of instances where this was done to the benefit of one team was batting and another occasion where it went against the other team when batting.

The only problem with the reviews is that players do use it in the hope they weren't out. SA out here used the system very well with the non striker often advising against a review.

To be honest I'm all for that. It cuts out the absolute howlers and still allows batsmen or bowlers to call for reviews that need technology and a bit of time to study. I am so fed up with the umpires in the current Ind vs Eng series and can't believe we are living in an age where we are still making decisions by the naked eye when we can utilise so much more. This series it has been England vs India + umpires and their bad decisions could still effect the outcome of the series. Umpires shouldn't be allowed to have such an impact on games. Cricket, and especially test cricket, needs to modernise to maintain interest so I am always up for new ideas that keep the sport as competitive an unbiased as possible.

  • Yeah! that could rule out horrible decisions. Sounds like a fair system

I'm with Bill here, make DRS compulsory for ALL teams & leave it as it is.

It is a much better and fairer system - they should use it!
