How do I use her- compounds in German sentences?

I always come to times in which I'd like to use one, and feel that it is necessary. Something about the sentence seems to be begging for the her- compound, but, out of fear that it'll be wrong, I refrain myself. Then I'm often corrected that I should have used such a word. But I don't know when. It just seems natural. But, grammatically speaking, when should I use this? Could y'all give examples?

Update:

Thanks, but you thought wrong. I'm talking about words like herum, heran, herauf, heraus, etc.

If you are not sure, don' use it.

Use only words that you find in the dictionary.

I think you are talking about separable verbs with the her- prefix.

They are used just like any other separable verb in the way that you put the separable prefix at the and of the main clause.

Example: herkommen: ich komme her, du kommst her, er kommt her, wir kommen her ....
