The letter arrived in the morning. The mail had arrived and been brought in to be passed out as it had every Monday before. It was rare for a student to ever get a letter, seeing as this was a boarding school for orphaned teens. The school went from sixth grade through twelfth grade. When she received the letter, Sabrina had been buttering a partially burnt piece of toast. The school secretary walked into the room holding the new mail. Each manilla envelope was sealed by hand with a blob of red wax, stamped with the sender’s crest. Two of the envelopes that stood out from the others, sealed with gold wax. The secretary moved down the aisle between the student’s tables on her normal route to the staff tables. Instead of continuing down the normal route to the end of the hall, she turned and placed one of the gold sealed envelope in front of Sabrina. Looking up, surprised, Sabrina watched the secretary walk away and then scanned the room for her sister, Bella. Their eyes met, her sister’s questioning. She shrugged and Bella gave a curt nod as if to signify that she would inquire about it later. Sabrina looked back down at the letter. She hadn’t received mail since she had stopped writing back and forth to her sixth grade pen-pal. She looked up in time to see the secretary handing the second gold envelope to the headmistress.
“Wow Brina, you got a letter!” Lexi chattered excitedly. “What is it about, and who from?” Lexi’s eyes widened and she smiled in hopeful delight. “Oh! What if it’s from a long lost relative and you’re actually a princess heiress?” The thing about Lexi was she could say these kinds of things and be perfectly serious.
“I don’t know what it’s about and there doesn’t seem to be a return address. Only my name on the back.” Sabrina said, Picking up the envelope and turning it back and forth. She turned it back to the front where the wax seal was and casually ran her fingers around the emblem stamped into it. A crown that seemed to glow with light. Sliding her nails under the edge of the wax seal she broke it free from the paper and flipped up the top of the envelope. A sudden silence hung over and around her as everyone close enough to notice, watched her pull a simple folded letter from the envelope. Lexi giggled nervously. Sabrina slowly unfolded the paper, revealing beautiful spiralling handwriting. She began to read.
My dear Sabrina,
I apologize for not contacting you before now.I had made a promise to your mother that I would not until absolutely need be. Unfortunately such a situation has arisen and I need to request that you come at once to my home. I have sent a letter to your headmistress as well letting her know the circumstances. As my goddaughter I need you to understand that this is matter very important. You and Bella will leave this afternoon and travel until night. When you arrive I will explain more. You will meet my dear friends who lost their parents in the unfortunate accident that took the lives of your own parents as well. I’m aware learning that you are not alone and have a godmother and that you need to trust me on so little information could be overwhelming and hard to take in. I know you are a strong girl and trust you will be able to cope with this small amount of information and sudden happenings. I will see you seen.
Queen Belaku
“Goddaughter?!” Sabrina’s eyes widened. She had never know she had godparents! “A godmother who is a queen?” Thoughts rushed through Sabrinas mind. she remembered the attack the night her parents died. It had been dark and cold when King Ciemny’s trackers had lead his personal assassins to her parents and the people they were meeting with. Bella had been only four and Sabrina herself had been 8. Sabrina had been hit hard in the head and suffered from slight amnesia, so she could barely remember anything from that night or how she had ended up in the orphanage the next day. Sabrina sat back taking it all in. Leaving the school today? Wait, how soon were they going to leave? They needed to pack like right now!
“What did the letter say?” Lexi asked trying to look over Sabrina’s shoulder.
“Oh it was from my godmother.” Sabrina stated dazedly. “She wants me and Bella to go to her house leaving today.” Lexi’s eyes widened.
“What? Today? Why so soon? Godmother? who is she anywho?” Lexi asked curiously.
“She.....she’s Queen Belaku.” Sabrina blurted out. Lexi’s jaw dropped.
“Oh my gosh! I was ...I....I was....Right! I knew you were connected to royalty somehow! I just knew it!” Lexi squealed happily.
sabrina looked over to where her sister was sitting and sure enough the young girls eyes were staring right at her. The younger girl took in her sisters dazed expression and her brow crinkled in confusion. Just then the headmistress got up and walked over to Sabrina.
"Sabrina I need you and your sister to go at once to pack your bags. Pack only the things you find most necessary and meet me in the front hall in half an hour." with that she turned and went back to her tab

Firstly I suggest that a messenger from the Queen is sent to the school, not a letter (gathering from the style of writing it is set in the older days ... so a messenger would have been a quicker mode of delivering a note). Also the messenger would remain to take the girls away (again why send a letter that someone will pick you up tonight ... in the olden days there would have been uncertainties with when mail arrived, so a hand delivered message would make more sense).
I think the speed of the opening is okay, however as suggested some details and development of characters would work a lot better (the mention of the assassins etc. should be omitted ... would sound better if she was unaware of such happenings ... too young to remember or has suppressed these memories. This allows for you to later delve into these matters ... you already have enough going on in this section to keep the reader guessing and interested.
Good start though and thanks for sharing.
