How longs does it generally take to get a dog reliable in tracking.?

I have a GSD that i have raised and obedience trained. I use to do some tracking games with his ball and some other toys but I am wanting to make the transition to tracking people and other objects. I have a pretty good grasp of how to get this doe in relation to what motivates my dog and all that but I will take some more suggestions and ideas from other people as to how you get this done.

The bigger question is how long should this take for a dog that already knows how to use his nose and has done some tracking already to find me me and his ball?

First, sport tracking or real world tracking? Second, how long depends upon your skills, your dog's hunt drives, time you invest into it, etc. Let me know, we can talk more.

although you aren't training with them, search and rescue usually takes 6-8 months before final trials.
