I am a Christian and i am serious about my Faith. My hobbies are training, breeding, and rescueing dogs. I am also a musician and I teach highschool choral music. One day i would like to get into competitive obedience and eventually some prtection worrk with dogs.

  • Dog obedience around other dog?

I have a German shepherd that I have trained from a very youn pup and he is doing advanced off leash stuff. Tracking, protection, and is well balanced. Although he is a tough cookie I have been able to win his trust and he works and and works hard for me.

Problem is more prevalent recently around other dogs. He seems to loose all newton for obedience and thus breaks commands that were sharp and impressive. He is now 2 years old and is a very dominant male.

Is this due to sexual maturation.

    Anybody else have similar dealings?

Hats a good plan of action?? I am doing competitive obedience soon

  • is it safe to say that protective barking is fear based?

Based on some comments from a previous question, i am lead to understand that people classify protective, aggressive barking as an expression of fear.

Is this true and if that's the case does that mean that a dog that barks and is not a trustworthy dog to when under stress?........... just for thought and clarification ..

  • For trainers and handlers of working dogs (ONLY) - is this e-collar aggression?

My gsd is about 15 months old now.. He has spent a little time with a family member keeping a property safe.. Somewhere along the way a bark e-collar was placed on this my pup (not happy about this) and and now it seems that my pup is even more aggressive than he was previously. Almost out of control.. So I started the process of re-doing all the basic obedience and socialization

He responds to me well of course because I trained the dog and I have his respect but when it comes to visitors in the yard or a strange dog in the area that doesn't belong he is way over the top.

Could the bark collar have done more harm than good.. I pretty much know how to fix the problem but I was really set back and discouraged by his his new responses..

Really wanna hear some helpful conversation from trainers/owners who may have had experience with this.

  • Poinsettia propagation?

Is there a certain or preferred way to propagate poinsettias?

Can you do them like some plants and just place cuttings in water or would t be better to try some bark-soil, or some other quick draining soil mixture?

  • Will the average squirrel dog go after other small game?

I am considering some breed of small dog for small game hunting and I wonder... If I train a dog on squirrel is it likely that the dog go after other game..

I am used to dogs that emphasize on obedience and protection.. Most of the people and who i have seen that have hunting dogs like this are usually away from cats and other animals because they tend to go after anything that moves.. Is this what to expect or can saaaayyy a jack russel be trained on squirrels and nothing else.

  • For all the real dog trainers out there.. BIG ISSUE!!?

Please don't comment unless you have had years of experience in training dogs......

I consider myself as fairly proficient as a trainer and more importantly I consider myself an evolving learner as it relates to training techniques and styles.

Well the issue is.. I was dealing with another older trainer not too long ago and I have always known him to employ very good motivational and teaching techniques and having to use very little negative reinforcement.

This one case was different... I have to admit the German Shepherd was a tough guy. pushy and very drivey but the dog knew all the commands and what was expected of him very well. we have it documented and videos to prove it.

Long story short I Saw the guy use what i consider to be excessive force in getting the dog to comply and resist temptation of chasing cats or going after the toy after being told to leave it. I

I'm sorry but i couldnt get with his methods but i must admit the dog continued to work in high energy, enjoying the work, .. all of this minus the forward thinking that he had displayed before. His explanation for this as I questioned him was that some dogs are extremely hard and they require a firmer hand to get their attention .. He went on to talk about some elements of rank drive that I already knew but i need to hear someone else's experiences as a point of reference.

  • What would be a good low maintenance dog for squirrel hunting?

In the next few years I am considering a small hunting companion for hunting squirrels and maybe flushing rabbits and maybe killing rats. Not interested in the traditional squirrel dog look.. but I don't care for the yappy over-the-top antics of the a lot of terriers..

  • How longs does it generally take to get a dog reliable in tracking.?

I have a GSD that i have raised and obedience trained. I use to do some tracking games with his ball and some other toys but I am wanting to make the transition to tracking people and other objects. I have a pretty good grasp of how to get this doe in relation to what motivates my dog and all that but I will take some more suggestions and ideas from other people as to how you get this done.

The bigger question is how long should this take for a dog that already knows how to use his nose and has done some tracking already to find me me and his ball?

  • Firearm Reciprocity from state to state question?

I am finding out the laws about firearms and I have learned a lot but I have one question lingering..

In Mississippi you can have a pistol in the home or in the vehicle without any special permits.. And I understand that if you wanted to carry a concealed weapon that you have to get a permit but what about going from state to state within the reciprocity.. Does this mean that if your state has reciprocity with another state that you don't have to have a permit to have the firearm in your car for that state as well?

  • Drive and focus in older dogs?

I have been training dogs for a while and I am a stickler for precision. Although I have never tried to do this with a n older dog I was wondering are there many of you who have taken an older dog and done some competitive level heeling or anything of that nature. I know a lot of dogs are naturally drivey and motivated but what about the average dog that my not be so driven..

Just for conversation's sake,... what are your thoughts???

  • Bad conformation... Questions...?

I have an months old german shepherd that is developing very well and has done extremely well with his focus and drive..

I had a question about his stance. His front legs are straight until we get down to his pasterns.. His pasterns are normal for a pup but they do go in when he is just standing around being lazy.. I seem to think that he may grow out of this because when he is aroused, at attention, or on guard he has a totally different stance. As a younger pup he did have some issues with growing pains but seemed to move past this very well...

We are talking about a very dominant and athletic dog. relatively tall as well. he should be roughly 26-28 inches and approximately 60lbs or so.

    ur thoughts??

  • growing cypress tree fro cone.... help?

For the last few months I have been watching cones grow on these cypress tree that the in-laws have in their yard.. Just by the nature of trees I figured upon maturity that these cones contain seeds of some sort and since I was doing bonsai, this would be a good species to work with.

The question is should you wait until the cones try completely out before you you try to plant them and do you need to break the cones open and find seeds or just put the whole thing in the ground?

Hopefully someone can help me out.
