If I owe a collection agency money from an unpaid bill, can they legally break that bill up into 4 bills?

They've take a $800 medical bill and turned it into 4 smaller bills, So now instead of having one account in collections, I have four.

Update:

No, I haven't even agreed to pay anything. they took the bill and opened four accounts one for:

1:$50

2:$250

3:$45

4:$455

Probably they may be getting him for lying to a choose or some thing like that but so far as i know they are not able to arrest you for money owed. No debtors prisons in the U.S. Except the court docket twists it about love it sounds happened in this case. Sounds like he will have to at least try to get a authorized aid legal professional if he cannot get a PD. I owed the clinic $seventy two,000 for a stroke they usually wrote it off before they even provided the invoice ... Most hospitals have donors who will back these debts but the character has to apply for them and now not promise to pay them and exhibit they've no approach to pay. If you are up front with them they'll discover a software a good way to maintain it for you. The hospital's main intention is to get paid but they mostly want the sufferer's co-operation and maybe the signing of some files to quilt the hospital. The judge normally knew this and used to be upset that the appropriate channels had not been followed so he got here down tough possibly not knowing that your relative did not understand that alternatives had been on hand. Oftentimes the sanatorium won't volunteer the info except asked due to the fact that might purpose a run on the donors generosity and the sanatorium may just fear the lack of some donors if that occurs. I suppose the only step at this point is to carry in a public defender or contact authorized support for your area. They are no longer effortless to find however if you happen to contact your regional county wellbeing medical institution they should have a quantity for legal support or be ready to steer you to anyone who does. The charities will all have the numbers too. Catholic Charities can probably advocate a authorized help attorney. I'm Dartagnon

Some medical bills cover separate depts like xray, lab , physical therapy, pharmacy etc etc lumped together on one bill. Sometimes hospitals just batch the charges on one bill.

Each one of these depts can bill you individually depending on how they are managed. Often a lab that draws urine , blood specimens may be ran by a separate entity in that hospital. As a company separate from the hospital they can place unpaid debts under collections.

Often , all the separate entities use the same collection agency as a matter of convenience. It sounds like this is the case. Check the statement and see if it lists different services with separate charges.

There is more to this story.

    This is unheard of.

Are you sure they did not just set up a payment plan of 4 months?

Something tells me that you don't even have your credit reports.

    Check them at

    Annual Credit Report.com

All 3 reports are free once a year. No card required.

Again, something tells me they sent you a bill.

Are you sure it's four accounts? This is possible if it is school loans with some being subsidized and some being unsubsidized.
