Wrong RAM speed, the physical damage that can be done?

I help out at my local computer refurbishing site for schools and we get lots of old Compaq Armadas and Dell latitudes that we can't donate so we get to experiment and have fun with them. Me being young, I get a lot of experience from going there but sometimes the seniors don't have an answer to everything. I'm aware that putting in a faster or slower speed of ram can damage either the motherboard or the processor because it can't keep up with the data that is coming from the ram, but what is the physical damage done that makes your computer fail? It would be really nice to know.

wrong ram speed will not physically damage the pc, it may fail to boot up but that can be fixed by trying different ram, as long as you dont try to force the wrong type of ram in it will be fine, such as ddr, ddr2 , ddr3, they are all diffferent and cannot be swapped between them, a ddr3 pc must use ddr3 ram etc
