Number of miles between oil changes.?

What is the most number of miles you have put on a car before changing oil?

I know of one person that has 364,000 on his car. He uses a synthetic oil and only changes the oil filter. He has no major wear on the engine and it is sludge free.

I go 20,000 and was just wondering if anyone else is doing the same thing?

I know "The oil is the life blood of the engine."

Update:

@ I personally know the guy with the 364,000 miles on the car. My Chrysler Town& Country

goes 25,000 between oil changes with no problem.

He does add oil whenever it gets low or when the filter is replaced.

Iamtotal so far has the best answer for me.

We need to know the brand and type of motor oil you're using and the year make and model of your car! Amzoil is the only brand that advertises 25,000 mile oil changes.

We may recommend 20,000 oil changes when the car is driven predominately long distance driving. If the vehicle is being driven mixed town and highway miles, no way in heck would we recommend 20,000 oil changes.

People will find more reasons to not change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles! People with motors that have adjustable cam timing know better. When regular oil goes more than 3,000 miles, gets low, or stays in the motor over the 3 month recommendation, tarnish develops and builds up inside the motor and any other part lubricated by it. This messes up the cam advance solenoids that control the oil flow through the adjustable cam mechanism and the mechanism itself. You start throwing codes and experience loss of power. This gets to be an expensive repair and could have been a different story with more frequent oil and filter changes. Hey, have you ever looked at the new oil filters? They are half as big as they used to be.Motors have closer tolerances and run hotter. Nobody makes an oil filter that goes more than 3,000 miles so if you use synthetic oil do you at least change the filter every 3,000 miles? Bottom line is everyone believes what they want and acts accordingly. Hope all of you have the smarts to learn the first time! I don't expect you to listen until you learn the hard way!

Synthetic oil can go 10K mile between changes, Standard oil 3 to 5K. Some of the newer cars can go 7500 between changes.

As for the 364,000 miles...nope..not buying it. Oil filters remove debris/dirt but not the diluted gas from the oil.

Oil changes are the cheapest thing you can do to help keep your car running for a long time.

Sorry but I call BS even synthetic oil gets contaminated overtime and has to be changed, 364,000 on oil sounds just like the car that runs on water an urban legend.

In Australia all new cars servicing is done every 15000kms to 20000kms, (9000 to 12500 miles) and that is the manufactures recommendations, older cars say from mid 90's and older every 10000kms, this is oil change and filter change. Just go through the cars log book if it has it and will have a section of pages the mechanics stamp or rip out each service and will have the period between miles to get it serviced.

3,000 miles is the optimum amount to change your oil. It keeps the engine healthiest by changing the oil every 3,000 miles. Think of your car engine as the human body. Oil is the life blood as water is to the body. Take care of it when you should; and it will take care of you and get you to where you need to go with no issues.

he has to change the oil it would burn off and the engine would seize. i use mobil 1 full synthetic every 4-5k miles and have never had a leak burn seep ANYTHING. engine on my last car was completely dry at 150k when i traded it in but i have had more that one with 200-250k just as clean.

the maximum is 15k on mobil 1 in BMW etc with a large capacity. my car says every 10k but i do it at 4-5 like i said

and i would love to see what happens to mr caps lock when he doesn't follow the factory mandate for severe driving if he lives in a severe state the manufacturer will bounce his engine claim like a bouncy ball i see it all day long at work (yes i work for a dealer) because we are "ripping them off" or "my brothers wifes aunts cousins husband says its fine!"

read the owners manual, but most vehicles are design to chance the oil every 3,000 miles or every 3 months.

i've put about 8 but would never go over its cheaper to replace oil than an engine and no reason to risk it
