American names with middle initials?

I am not a native english speaker and I just have one question I have never understood about some american names. How come some people (usually famous people) have their middle initial as a part of their name in credits and such? What I mean are names like Samuel L. Jackson. How come it is like that instead of just Samuel Jackson?

    Yeah, some just flow better when they're said a certain way.
