I need a nice sweet/cheap wine.?
I'm looking for some wine between $10-$15 that is sweet and above 9%Acl/Vol. I'm hosting a Christmas party this week and nobody coming likes bitter/dry wines and I'm on a budget. I have served bad (vinegar) grape juice once. That once too many times.
I need brand names and the variety (Merlot, Pinot etc.)
P.S. We prefer Red Wines.

Beringer makes a White Zinfandel / Chardonnay blend that is tolerable for a blush wine.
Beaujolais Nouveau would be another good choice, as would any Riesling or Moscato. Try Barefoot, Yellow Tail or Little Penguin.

You could go with a Lambrusco from producers like Lini, Medici Ermete, Fiorini, Luciano Saetti, Cleto Chiarli. Or maybe some sparkling Bonarda or Babera. Or a light red from Beaujolais or the Loire that has undergone carbonic maceration, which brings all the fruit to the front and reduce any hard edges that the wine might have. They aren't sweet, but they don't taste dry. They're fruity. Or you could get some fortified wines like ruby ports or Banyuls. Quinta do Infantado makes a nice medium port that could work at the table. Though, ruby ports and Banyuls check in at closer to 20% ABV. And lastly, you might find cheap Gamay or red Zinfandel agreeable. The tannins are often very soft and the wines are rarely harsh or bitter.

For white wine, I'd suggest Kendall Jackson's Vinter's Reserve Chardonnay. It's a little sweet like apples and has a buttery taste too. It runs about $15 per bottle.
Try Arbor Mist! I like their White Pear Chardonnary, it's sweet and not at all bitter. Bonus - the double bottles are often only $7, so you get a lot of bang for your buck. Arbor Mist also has red wines, and they really aren't that bad. I have $70 bottles of wine at home, and also Arbor Mist!
My current favorite RED wine is Apothic Red from California...it's a blend of many red wines and seems to go perfectly with anything food-wise. It is around $14 a bottle, very delicious! It is a bit dry, but it is not bitter; it is more sweet like Cabernet would be.
I'd stay away from Red Zinfandel - that's the dryest usually. Cabernet is a good crowd pleaser because is is normally sweet. I really like red wines from Argentina and Chili, they seem to be generally sweeter and not as harsh as other regions.
Good luck with your party!
