What does it mean when all your car warning lights go on?

I was driving down the freeway, and all of the sudden I heard a noise and then the low fuel light and other lights all went on. I had half a tank of fuel. They were on for about 30 seconds then went away. I drove home and now my car wont start without a jump. Is it possibly just a bad battery? or something more?

What type of car is it? Some cars are designed to trigger multiple dash lights when the alternator fails. To diagnose the problem, I think you should start by visually inspecting the battery (make sure the connections are clean and tightly connected. Next, check the drive belt to make sure it's on right. If it's missing or displaced, you may need to replace it (or just nudge it back into place and tighten the pulley).

However, if all that checks out, you probably have a faulty Alternator. I recommend taking it to a shop for diagnosis to make sure it's just the alternator and not faulty wiring. I cannot imagine how many perfectly good alternators have been thrown out just because of a bad connection.

    The battery...

    The battery connections. Clean them.

    The alternator has failed.

Your alternator stopped charging for some reason, check the belt first.
