Can someone please explain the String Theory?

I am not a physicist, still in high school and I am very interested in physics. Can someone please explain this theory without getting extremely technical, I searched around the web, on Wiki it was a little bit hard to understand. I know nothing about the String Theory except that it is something about electrons being oscillating lines and what not, so can you please start from scratch. Thank you in advance to all who answers.

    take a look at > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYAdwS5MFjQ

also look up more videos from Michio Kaku as he is good at explaining about String Theory and physics.

here is the first part of an older 4 part more detailed video >

In very very basic terms string theory is a proposed way to unite Quantum Mechanics and Special/General Relativity via the assumption that ALL matter (not just electrons) at its most basic level is made up of tiny little strings of "stuff".. These tiny strings, and their predicted behavior, allows a mathematical model to exist that explains why things behave in ONE way on a very tiny scale (quantum mechanics) and in a totally different way on a large scale (relativity). This mathematical model also predicts that there are more then 4 dimensions, some models predicting as many as 11 or 14. Unless we find these dimensions, the model is useless and makes no sense.

String theory guesses that everything in our local universe is made up of infinitely thin very short strings of vibrating energy whose appearance in our space time depends solely on how they vibrate. So all the sub atomic particles, quarks, electron, muons, neutrinos, photons, gluons, etc., are just strings vibrating differently.

To make their equations come out right, so they didn't have "silly" answers like probabilities greater than 1.00, the stringers had to use 9 spatial dimensions and 1 temporal on. Recognize our local universe needs only three spatial and one temporal to precisely and exactly pin point any place in our space-time. So those extra dimensions are really only mathematical tricks to make the answers come out right. There is no evidence that those extra dimensions actually exist despite people looking for them in the labs.

I recommend "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene, a string theorist who at least recognizes the limitations of string theory...and there are several.
